British Regimental Badge Identification Booklet

'Cloth Head-Dress Badges of the British Forces since 1958'

Published privately, the Draft Edition sold-out within a week. Its publication was intended to draw-out other badges which have not yet come to light and I plan to publish a Revised Edition to take into account more badges which have appeared as a result of the Draft Edition - especially more Cadet Force badges.

Other than 'Badge Backings and Special Embellishments of the British Army' (which mentions several of the badges but illustrates very few), I am not aware of any other book on the subject. Most of the badges in my booklet will be illustrated in full colour.

To promote the collecting of this hitherto neglected field I intend to issue the booklet on a minimum-cost basis. As a fairly specialist work, I did not anticipate selling many booklets, so the Draft edition was quite limited - it appears I was mistaken - there is now an even bigger queue for the next edition!

Perhaps this will be the next trend in cap badge collecting - I remember when people refused to collect 'Staybrites' (Anodised Aluminium badges) as they were 'modern tinny things'. The same people who now recognise that their cap badge collection is not complete without Staybrites, may well come to the same conclusion regarding cloth head-dress badges - when did you last hear of an SAS soldier wearing a metal cap badge? Is your collection complete without cloth cap badges?

It is intended as an identification booklet - mainly illustrations with minimum text - it concentrates on modern machine-made badges worn by Other Ranks from 1958 onwards on the following items of headgear: Beret, Combat Helmet (including Tartan patches), Norway-issue Ski cap, Combat cap, Gurkha Hat, Jungle / Desert floppy hat and Side-hat.

Where several variants exist for a Unit, I have tried to illustrate all of them (105 for the Draft Edition, over 172 so far for the Second Edition) and have included a list of others which are not yet illustrated (another 10 or so). Some cloth Cadet hat badges are illustrated which may solve some puzzles in your collection as many are similar to Regular Army badges.

It is titled 'Cloth Head-Dress Badges of the British Forces since 1958'. Actual cost to be confirmed depending on how big the booklet gets. I am trying to keep the cost under £10, though colour illustrations really do add to the production cost.

The ISBN will be 0 9523643 0 1. By using this number you should be able to order the booklet from a bookseller or library - or direct from me if you want an autographed copy! DON'T try using the ISBN just yet as I'm still to register the number - which I don't want to do until I'm sure of the cost and number of pages.

When is the next edition due?

The majority of the badges have now been photographed - but I am busy with a lot of other work at present so it will probably be in early 2003.  I'll announce publication on this e-mail page and in my regular badge catalogues.

Reserve an autographed Second Edition now!
